We are sure you are aware Bray now has a direct provision centre in the Esplanade Hotel on the seafront.
Direct provision has been widely criticised in society for the way Asylum Seekers are left in limbo for years on-end in inappropriate accommodation unable to get on with their lives after experiencing in most cases harrowing ordeals fleeing their own countries then travelling long dangerous journeys to get here, one third of those in Direct Provision are children.
Food and accommodation is provided by the state and a weekly allowance of €38.80 per adult & €29.80 per child. They have access to health care and primary and secondary education. Since 2018 asylum seekers can apply for permission to work, however, less than one third can work for a variety of reasons.
We were shocked to hear that the Esplanade staff are receiving regular hate callers. We felt we should do something to help to let them know Bray people do care. When we made contact, we asked what the residents of the esplanade needed the most right now, please see the list below.
We were delighted to hear they have received donations from people in Bray but so far, the women seem to get the majority of the donations but the men don’t get much.
We are asking for your help to donate what you can. Donations can be dropped into the clubhouse at any time, there is a storage container in the lobby, we will keep a channel of communication open with the Esplanade and advise you when their needs change.
